A D-pad should register the direction you press, release cleanly, and transition predictably between directions. This test highlights the directional inputs reported by the browser so you can check individual presses, diagonals, and fast changes.
Start with up, down, left, and right one at a time. Then roll your thumb around the pad and test opposite-direction changes. If a direction appears without being pressed, repeat the test with the controller resting on a flat surface.
Many modern controllers expose the D-pad as four buttons, but some older or generic devices report it as an axis or hat switch. Browser mapping can affect how those layouts appear.

Do not assume simultaneous opposite directions indicate damage; some firmware filters or allows them by design.
Many D-pads can activate two adjacent direction inputs together, which games interpret as a diagonal. Whether that is desirable depends on the game and the physical pad design.
Repeat the press gently and reconnect the controller. If the input remains active across browsers or supported device software, the pad or its internal contact may need cleaning or service.
Some DirectInput and older USB controllers use a hat-switch representation. The standardized browser mapping may convert it, but unrecognized devices can retain their original layout.
