Gamepad mapping test

Compare physical controls with the browser-reported button and axis indexes.

Stick drift and deadzone

Set the controller on a steady surface and do not touch either stick during the sample.

Ready for an 8-second sample.

Range and circularity

Rotate each stick slowly around the outer edge, then sweep the center in several directions.

Move the sticks to begin range tracking.

Buttons and D-pad

Press and release every available control. Analog buttons show their reported value.

No button activity yet.

Axes and mapping

Use these values to spot unusual layouts. A blank standard mapping does not automatically mean the controller is defective.

Optional capability

Vibration check

Browser haptics are not available for every controller, connection method, operating system, or browser.

Connect a controller to check browser support.

Keep your result

Reports are stored in this browser. Sharing is optional and puts only the selected result in the link.

Diagnostic readings describe what this browser receives, not electrical measurements from the controller. Confirm important findings in the game or device where you plan to use the controller.

What it checks

Use the test as evidence, not a pass/fail sticker.

Gamepad mapping translates device-specific buttons and axes into a familiar standard layout. This page shows the browser's mapping status alongside raw indexes so you can understand why a physical control may appear under the wrong label.

Press one control at a time and note which index changes. Then move each analog control through its range. The raw view is especially helpful for generic USB pads, DirectInput devices, retro controllers, and gamepads with selectable compatibility modes.

The device name and mapping string are supplied by the browser and operating system. They may be shortened, generic, or intentionally limited for privacy, so they should not be treated as a guaranteed model identifier.

Signals to watch

  • Browser-reported device ID and mapping status
  • Raw button indexes with live pressure values
  • Raw axis indexes and current positions
  • Standard-label comparison where mapping is available
Test procedure

Run a repeatable check.

  1. 01

Connect the controller and press any button so the browser can detect it.

  2. 02

Use the focused test panel slowly and deliberately. Watch the live values during presses, holds, movement, and release.

  3. 03

Repeat any suspicious result after reconnecting, then confirm it in the game or device where the controller will be used.

Interpretation

What a useful result looks like.

Look for repeatable behavior rather than a single momentary value. Stable, symmetric movement and clean press-and-release behavior are generally more useful signs than chasing a perfect zero.

If a result changes substantially between USB and wireless modes, browsers, or computers, the connection, driver, browser, or remapping software may be part of the problem.

Important browser-test limits

Do not share a report if its device ID contains information you consider private.

Frequently asked

Questions about gamepad mapping and raw input test

What does standard mapping mean?

It means the browser presents the controller using the W3C standard gamepad layout. An empty mapping value does not mean the controller is broken; it means the browser did not apply that standard layout.

Can I change the mapping on this page?

No. The tool can document the inputs it receives, but remapping normally happens in a game, Steam, operating-system software, or the controller manufacturer's app.

Why is the controller name generic?

Drivers, adapters, controller modes, and browser privacy behavior can replace a retail product name with a generic device description.
