Generic USB controllers can use many chipsets and layouts, so begin with the raw input view instead of assuming Xbox or PlayStation labels. Press one control at a time and note the button or axis index that changes.

If the browser reports a standard mapping, the familiar diagram can provide convenient labels. If it does not, the controller may still work correctly in software that supports its DirectInput, HID, arcade, flight, or retro-style layout.

This page can test only devices recognized by the operating system and exposed through the browser Gamepad API. Keyboards, unsupported HID devices, specialized wheels, and controllers hidden behind unusual drivers may need native diagnostic software.

Why does my generic controller have no standard mapping?

The browser may not recognize that device ID as matching the standard gamepad layout. Raw buttons and axes can still be usable in games that support or remap the controller.

Can I create a permanent remap here?

No. Record the indexes here, then remap them in the game, Steam, operating-system tools, or trusted controller software.

Why is the D-pad reported as an axis?

Many DirectInput devices use a hat switch or axis-based representation. That is a layout choice, not necessarily a defect.
