What it checks

Use the test as evidence, not a pass/fail sticker.

A circularity test maps the outer path reported as you rotate an analog stick. It can reveal reduced range, uneven directions, clipped corners, or a shape that differs noticeably between the left and right sticks.

Rotate the selected stick slowly around its outer gate several times, then sweep through the center in horizontal, vertical, and diagonal directions. Smooth, deliberate movement produces a more useful map than flicking the stick quickly.

Controller firmware and operating-system drivers may normalize the raw sensor range before it reaches the browser. Use the plot to compare consistency and symmetry, not as proof of the physical gate's exact geometry.

What a useful result looks like.

Look for repeatable behavior rather than a single momentary value. Stable, symmetric movement and clean press-and-release behavior are generally more useful signs than chasing a perfect zero.

If a result changes substantially between USB and wireless modes, browsers, or computers, the connection, driver, browser, or remapping software may be part of the problem.

Questions about analog stick circularity and range test

Does the trace need to form a perfect circle?

No. Controller gates, firmware normalization, and stick mechanics vary. Look for repeatable gaps, severely short directions, or abrupt flat spots instead of expecting a mathematically perfect circle.

Why do diagonal values look different?

Some devices clamp, scale, or normalize diagonal input. A game may also apply its own circular or square response curve after receiving controller data.

Can I compare two controllers with this test?

Yes. Complete the same slow rotation pattern on each device and save separate reports. Keep the connection mode and browser the same for a fairer comparison.
