How to Check and Calibrate a Controller in Windows 11

Open Windows game controller settings, check input, and use calibration carefully when supported. Know when calibration will not fix hardware wear.

Understand the symptom

Start by separating hardware from software.

Windows 11 includes a legacy Game Controllers panel that can display device properties and, for some controller types, offer a calibration wizard. Availability and effect depend on the driver and input mode.

Many modern XInput controllers manage calibration in firmware or supported manufacturer software and may not expose a useful Windows calibration option. Calibration also cannot repair worn sensors, broken switches, intermittent cables, or mechanical damage.

Record a browser test before changing settings, follow only options shown for the selected device, and retest afterward under the same conditions.

Step-by-step

Work through the likely causes.

  1. 01

Connect the controller, press Windows+R, enter joy.cpl, and select OK to open Game Controllers.

  2. 02

Select the correct device, open Properties, and use the Test tab to confirm buttons and axes are arriving.

  3. 03

If a Settings or Calibrate option is available and appropriate for the device, follow its prompts without forcing controls beyond normal travel.

  4. 04

Return to the Test tab to confirm the center, range, and buttons after calibration.

  5. 05

Reload the browser tester and repeat the same drift, range, and trigger checks saved before calibration.

  6. 06

If calibration is unavailable or results remain poor, use supported manufacturer tools or service guidance for the exact model.

Free diagnostic

Check what the browser can see.

Open the full tester to inspect buttons, sticks, triggers, mapping, range, and neutral noise.

Run controller test
Verify the result

Repeat before you conclude.

A repeatable issue across connections, browsers, and native games is stronger evidence of a controller fault than a one-time browser reading. If the problem appears only in one game, review that game’s controller support, deadzone, remapping, and launcher settings.

What to keep in mind

Create a before-test record and avoid third-party calibration downloads from unknown sources.

How the browser readings are defined

Our live tools use the standardized browser Gamepad interface and explain its limits in our methodology. Device mappings and proprietary features can still differ by operating system, browser, connection, firmware, and controller mode.

Frequently asked

Questions about this issue

Why is the Calibrate button missing or ineffective?

The current driver or XInput device may manage calibration elsewhere. Use the manufacturer's supported app or console instructions for that model.

Will Windows calibration fix stick drift?

It may correct some center or range configuration on supported devices, but it cannot reverse physical wear or damaged sensor components.

What does joy.cpl do?

It opens the Windows Game Controllers control-panel applet, where compatible devices can be selected and tested.
